When you are applying for a British passport you must bear in mind that you will need 2 standard passport photographs. However, there are lots of requirements when you are to take a photo of yourself.
In this chapter we will introduce you to all the photo requirements there are in order for your application to be accepted.
Standard passport photo requirements:
The photo has to be printed on a professional standard photo paper
The photo has to be taken within 30 days of the application date
The photo has to be taken either in black or white or in colour, printed on a white photo paper without borders
The background of the photo has to be cream/beige or light grey coloured
The photo quality has to be absolutely clean, cleared and in focus
The face has to be free of creases or tears
The photo needs to be unmarked at any side (except for countersignature reasons)
Use of any filter or Photoshopping is strictly forbidden
You must pay attention to your exact posture and the way you are shown on a passport photo as much as to the exact distance you are located from the camera.
The photo should be a close-up photograph showing the full head up until the upper shoulders
The photo should be clear and should not show any other objects or any other people
The contrast to the background should be clear
You should be facing straight forward and look straight in the camera
The face expression should be neutral showing you with your mouth closed
The eyes have to be open, visible and no reflection (possible result of wearing glasses) should be shown
You should not have hair in front of the eyes or cover the face even from the side
You should not have you hair covered unless it’s for religious reasons
Nothing should cover the face
You should not have any red eye
The photo should be free from any shadows on the face or behind you
Wearing of coloured contact lenses is forbidden
Wearing of sunglasses is forbidden
Wearing of glasses is only allowed if you are subscribed to wearing glasses and your eyes show through the lenses clearly free from glare or reflections
No smiling on the photograph
The size of the passport photograph in a British passport should be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high.
Your image shown on the photograph should be per the following:
The head to chin section should be between 29 mm and 34 mm high
Babies, toddles and children under 6 are not required to look straight into the camera however babies and toddlers should not be visibly holding any toys and should not have any dummies in the mouth. Babies under 1 year of age are not required to have their eyes open. The head can be supported with hand however it should not be visible on the photograph.
By the time of posting the 2 photos should be separated from each other, should be left loos and not physically attached to the application form.
